Our

Philosophy

We believe that comfort and style aren’t mutually exclusive; everything can be comfortable physically and conceptually when designing a space. The intentional design of a room is the best way to add harmony and elegance to the most basic of human needs—shelter—that has now evolved into an expression of our individuality and lifestyle. Our design favors classic lines, timeless antiques and a healthy touch of glamour, even masculine spaces need a small feminine touch.

We believe that designing a room is an education process, one where you share your lifestyle and desires and we help you purchase the best materials within your budget. We help build a language and cohesion for your space. Together, we create a home that represents your world. We know that quality materials always shine through and last longer than the latest fleeting fad. By breaking down your likes and dislikes we prevent your space from looking overly trendy and quickly dated by incorporating bespoke elements and personal artifacts.

We know that price does not always indicate quality as much as craftsmanship, which is why we always start by assessing the room’s envelope (walls, floors, ceilings, windows and doors) and pay homage to the architectural style of the overall structure.

“The best rooms have something to say about the people who live in them.”

– David Hicks

Our Story

At MKD, we design curated interiors that blend antique and contemporary items for residential clients: busy professionals, young families, and city dwelling retirees. Maiya’s trademark style is evident through the sophisticated use of color, pattern, texture, and layering.

Every home receives a personal touch of timelessness interwoven with natural elegance and sustainability. She enjoys helping her clients explore their own preferences and style to discreetly incorporate each homeowner's unique interests into their living spaces. Maiya takes pride in being able to identify visual details that others overlook, without losing sight of and appreciation for the bigger picture. She sees beauty—whether in color or form—even when others think there is none to be found.

Maiya is focused on creating authentic reflections of her clients’ personal style brought in line with how they live. Even the simplest of rooms are layered, resulting in well-balanced spaces that have a timeless European feel. Throughout her travels she always dedicates time to source unique pieces, learn about cultural arts, and add a unique stamp to ensure no two homes she designs look alike.

The firm’s projects extend across the east coast but are centered largely in Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia. Maiya lives and works in her 1920’s Victorian home in Hyattsville, Maryland, just minutes from Washington, DC. She and her husband, Ryan, share a love of travel where she often finds design inspiration while exploring the world.
